Assistant Inspector General

Captain Michael Maurier

Captain Maurier has been reenacting since 1997. He spent the first six years in gray, most of the rest in blue, and has traveled extensively and served at various ranks in a wide variety of units in events all over the US.

He is a member of the National Civil War Association in Northern California, rose through the ranks to become the NCWA's Confederate Brigade Adjutant and later, the Ordnance Sgt. for the Union Brigade. Captain Maurier currently serves on detachment from General Halleck's staff as the beleagured Inspector General for the NCWA's eminently and perpetually disreputable 2nd Brigade, 2nd Divison, 2nd Corps (Army of the Potomac). He is also been a member of the California Historical Artillery Association, home of the much-admired and respected, entirely horse-drawn, 3rd US Artillery.

Captain Maurier joined the Army of the Pacific in 2000 and served as AAIG on the First Federal Division Staff in 2006 and 2007. He then became Captain of the Headquarters (Police) Guard and Provost Marshal for Living History for the First Federal Division. He advanced to the post of first Federal Division AIG in 2009.

Captain Maurier holds a variety of advanced degrees including a Ph.D., plays upright bass and mandolin in various acoustic bands, is a high-tech publisher in Silicon Valley, and lives with his wife in Palo Alto, California.

Provost Marshal
(Security)

Captain Michael Pierpoint

The Event Security Liaison Officer handles all the Division’s coordination with the (modern) event site, including coordination of vehicle management, re-enactor registration verification, emergency response plan coordination, battlefield public safety, and on-site logistics.

Captain Pierpoint started Reenacting in 1994 in the Confederate Artillery where he learned all the artillery positions. He went on to become one of the founding members of the 44th Illinois Company Infantry and held the rank of First Sergeant for several years.

He later served as a Provost Guard at Shiloh in 1996 (Mudloh) and held some high ground there. He was also Provost Guard at Franklin 2004 and was promoted to Provost Marshal there.

Since then, Captain Pierpoint has become very interested in the role of the Provost Marshal in the American Civil War and has studied this subject intensively.

Captain Pierpoint most enjoys working with the staff of First Federal Division and going to schools and civic groups and talking about the American Civil War. He is a member of the Civil War Preservation Trust.

Captain Pierpoint and his wife, Gretel, reside in Southern Illinois.

Tom Jr. was a Sgt. in the cavalry at the time.

Tom Sr., who is currently a Sgt. in the 10th Missouri Cavalry, Division Cavalry Brigade, has been a member of the St. Louis County Police Department for 35 years. His son was following in his footsteps as well. Tom's lovely wife of over 35 years Ms. Fran (Bommarito) Smith is also active in reenacting.

The Smith's son-in-law Chris and their beautiful daughter Nichole Johnson remain close, and have a 7 year old blue-eyed son Christopher who has been riding with his Grandpa since he was 5 and is already anxious to begin his career in reenacting as well.

We are very proud to have Tom and his family with us and he will bring tremendous experience and knowledge to the First Federal Division.
