The Lightning Brigade is an all-arms organization that was formed in 2008 from infantry, cavalry, and artillery units throughout the southeast from the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. The Lightning Brigade was the 4th Battalion of the First Federal Division's Cavalry Brigade until the First Federal Division’s Executive Committee awarded our organization Brigade Status in January 2009.

Our name "The Lightning Brigade" was inspired by the original unit — Wilder's Indiana Lightning Brigade — which served with honor and distinction during the breakout at Hoover's Gap near Wartrace, Tennessee, the battle of Chickamauga, the fighting around Chattanooga, throughout the Atlanta campaign, and in Wilson's Alabama raid which resulted in General Bedford Forrest's surrender at Gainesville, Alabama.

The Lightning Brigade mirrors the original unit by portraying mounted infantry, dismounted infantry, and horse drawn artillery. In January 2009, the Lightning Brigade grew to over 500 active members when the Alabama Division of reenactors joined and formed the Brigade's 2nd Battalion.

While the primary impression of most units in the Lightning Brigade is Federal, the Brigade is is unique within the First Federal Division because some units in the Brigade can also portray Confederates when it is necessary to keep the sides historically balanced.

______

In 1991, I began doing living history events displaying artifacts, and displaying my interpretation of a basic camp set up. In 1992, my impression much improved, I still remained more of a living history guy, than a reenactor.

1993 was the first year for the newly formed 75th O.V.I. Since its humble beginnings, the 75th has grown into one of Florida’s premier reenacting groups. This year (2008) we celebrate our 15th anniversary, and our longevity is attributed to the quality of men and women who faithfully serve our rank and file. We are the very best, because we have the very best people.

In the 2007 – 2008 season we teamed up with the FFD under the Division Cavalry Brigade as the 4th Battalion (Lightening Brigade). This is a battalion, which consisted of all of the elements Infantry, Cavalry, and Artillery. The Lightening Brigade made its debut at the 143rd Battle of Atlanta.

In 2009 The Lightening Brigade was awarded Brigade status in the First Federal Division. Now the Lightening Brigade is the 5th Brigade in the First Federal Division an accomplishment we are very proud of. The future of the Lightening Brigade is bright. We will continue to grow, and strive to be the best unit in the field.
